ENC 1101 was a good class overrall. It was the best class I had this semester which isnt saying much but it really was a good class. I liked that we had discussions and it wasnt just reading from books and writing all year long. I also liked that the final project was on a topic of our choosing becuase it was pretty easy for me to type 7 pages on something that i care about then something then I dont. Writing about steroids in sports is soemthing that affects me as a fan and my major is sports management so it has to do with my future as well. I think I wrote a good paper and I couldnt see myself writing 8 pages on something I didnt care about or didnt know much about. So I obviously liked this class since I picked the same teacher agaain for next semester.

Barry Bonds
This is a picture with Barry Bonds wearing a bracelet for HIV/AIDS funds. This public service advertisement shows that Bonds isnt how he is perceived in the media. Most people think he is a cocky and somewhat mean individual and he only cares about himself. But this poster with him wearing the bracelet and showing that he cares about HIV/AIDS research shows a side to Barry Bonds that many people think doesnt exist.

Celia Cruz "Changing Times"
In this essay she writes about how times have changed not only in the music world but in the real world. She talks about the time when she made the video for "La Negra Tiene Tumbao" and how they hadnt told her that they model appearing in the video would be nude with only body paint covering her. So she said she filmed her part and she had to leave because she had something to do and when she was gonna watch the video for the first time in the Cristina show her publicist went up to her and told her that times have changed and that she shouldnt watch the video for the first time on tv. She said when she watched it she almost fainted since the model was not wearing much clothes. But her friend convinced her that this is how videos are now a days and she agreed and the video became a success but more important the model became famous in Mexico.

Chris Rock "Rockology"
In this essay rock talks about how rap music is not for white people and only for black people. That only black people understand it and that white people shouldnt complain about it becasue its not made for them. He says that rap music is to black people as country music is to white people. I think he is very hipocritical and when he says "white" people I dont know if he includes latin people in that context because I like rap music and for someone to say that its not for me is stupid because just cuz i dont live the life that rappers talk about in there music doesnt mean that i cant listen to it. Also, I hate country music so for him to say that country music is for white people is also stupid. I just hope that he doesnt include latin people when he says "white" people because I like Chris Rock but I may like him less after reading this essay he wrote.

Marc Anthony "Eulogy for Tito Puente"
In this short eulogy Marc Anthony talks about the legendary Tito Puente. Puente influenced not only Anthony but many other latin musicians. Anthony calls him the founding father of latin music and says that if it wasnt for him that noone would have carried latin music for as long as he did. Anthony calls him his friend, mentor, godfather and inspiration and says thats its painful knowing that he will never see him walk through a door and fill up a room again.

LL Cool J "Impotent Demon"
In this essay the rapper talks about the trauma he suffered as a child seeing his father shoot both his mother and his grandfather with a shotgun. His mother recovered his grandfather did not. He says how much of an inspiration his mother was to him becasue she continued to live here life as if nothing ever happened even though she was in a wheel chair and she always looked like nothing ever bothered her since she had already gone through more then most people will ever go through.

Mick Jagger "George Harrison"
Mick Jagger is the lead singer of the Rolling Stones one of the most succesful bands of all time and in this essay he writes about the "Quiet Beatle" George Harrison who was a member of the most influential band of all time the Beatles. Jagger talks about how Harrison deserves more recognition then he has gotten. Harrison was over shadowed as a Beatle with John Lennon and Paul McCartney being the most recognizable of the group. Harrison was a ground breaker in uniting rock & roll with charity. He did alot for many great causes and for Mick Jagger to admire George Harrison then that proves that he deserves the recognition.

Lance Armstrong "Back in the Saddle"
In this essay Armstrong talks about how cancer changed his life for the better. He says that they saying live everyday as if it were your last is a bad saying to live your life by. He says that he tried to do that and then he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He said at first he lost all faith and didnt want to live but then he realized he can beat it and lived his life the way he wanted. He says his pursuit of happiness meant going to his favorite restaurant and pursuing a plate of enchiladas. I see Armstrong as a good role model for kids becasue not only did he beat cancer but he didnt quit doing what he loved and became one of the most famous athletes ever and the most succesful cyclist ever.

Joe Piscopo "It's A Jersey Thing"
I picked this essay from Joe Piscopo because I liked him as a comedian. In this essay he talks about his home state of New Jersey. He talks about Jersey as a sports state and how fans there respect the other teams unlike New York and Philly. He also calls New Jersey the Rodney Dangerfield of states because they have always been second calss citizens. He also talks about how people from Jersey are nice people and if you have an attitude or are a mean person that you wont fit in at Jersey. Some people think of new jersey as a dirty state and many people from there wont admit it but Piscopo shows that he loves his city and true jersey people love it too and they dont care what you think about them.

Whale Rider
The movie Whale Rider was a interesting yet weird movie. I liked some of the movie and I hated the ending of it. In the ending I hate the fact that the girl rides the whale into the water and that she survives. It makes no sense because if she was taken so far away by the whales then how did they find her body. I also do no like the fact that the whale doesnt move until she touches it or tells it to or whatever. I know she was the chosen one to be the chief but they could have done something better then how it actually ended. Overall the movie wasnt horrible until the end when it became horrible. It's not a movie Id watch again just because of the ending.

I found Chuck D's essay "Free" Music Can Free The Artist to be a very interesting essay and I agreed with everything he said. I agree with the fact downloading songs on the internet helps artists more then it hurts them because people still buy the cd's and it gives them more recognition. For instance, if your downloading your favorite bands songs and you download one you've never heard and you like it you may want to buy that cd because you know theres more then 1 good song. Also, for lesser known artists it really helps them because not everyone can get on the radio and MTV, so the only way they have for people to listen to there songs is for people to download them off the internet.

For my research paper I am going to research something that has to do with sports since my major is sports management. I'm not sure what I'm going to research but for now I will just write about steroids in sports. Steroids are seen everywhere in sports from cycling to baseball to track and field and football, and while entertaining once athletes are caught using steroids everything theyve done through their careers is pretty much tarnished. I personally do not like to hear about when an athlete is caught on steroids because Id like to think that some of the athletes I look up to arent and when one of them shows up on ESPN because of steroids it makes me feel cheated becuase it might be someone who I respect as an athlete. I wont do my research paper on steroids in sports because although it may be important Id like to think that most of the guys just dont do it.

From the two stories given I made the mistake of reading the more boring one of the two which was "Sex, Lies & Advertising" by Gloria Steinem. I found it a boring story because the fact that it was written by a feminist and I didnt read the info that said that she was a feminist because if I had I would not have read it. Like most feminist she just complains on and on about advertising in magazines and how they portray women in a wrong and stereotypical way. She doesnt like the ads to be of women depressed because they have dirty laundry or moms going crazy because the kids are driving her crazy but she wants the ads to be about helpful womens products. I think she is full of it and is just the typical feminist who just blabs on and on about something pointless and try to make it seem like its important until someone else agrees with them. I'm glad I read most of this story ( I couldnt read the rest ) because now I know who Gloria Steinem is and if I ever come across another one of her stories or somethin about her on tv I will make sure to flip the page or change the channel.

The story im writing about is Michael Jordan's story "The Nike Deal". This story caught my eye because it was written by Michael Jordan, enough said. I found it interesting because he says that he didnt want to sign with Nike at first and instead wanted to sign with adidas. I think if he had signed with adidas his shoes wouldnt be half as big as they are now. Nowadays whenever the new Jordans come out theres people that camp out in front of shoe stores just to get his new shoes and I think had they been adidas it just wouldnt be the same.
